i want a little notebook
filled with words
and papers slipped
between the pages
words
lines and curves making
beautiful pictures
weighty with meaning

i want a little notebook
thicker for being filled
with pieces of thoughts
half-done poems
the feel of its pages
in my hands
crinkly under my fingers
consolation for life that's
dreadfully important
here and there

i want a little notebook
to carry in my pocket
i might look through it
or not
but knowing it's there
a gateway to promises
not yet redeemed
