my heart leaps not within my breast
as done with other men
no flame burns hot inside my chest
to scorch my soul again

and though the stars have not aligned
in heeding fate's desire
i'm finding love is best designed
with calmer, gentler fire

enduring warmth envelopes me
and holds my fragile heart
caressing scars i cannot see
and giving hope a start
