“What?” Duncan blurted out incredulously.
He felt an unpleasant hard knot, like a cold rock, settle in the pit of his stomach. Nerves, already frayed, made his skin crawl. Deep inside, a quiet voice whispered to Duncan that the situation had suddenly gotten much worse.
The only bright spot, and it was a meager one, was that Nakano Abe and the others might not actually know about the treaty. So there was a chance he could go free. However, that would leave Sofia here to fend for herself. That thought bothered him.
Nakano Abe chuckled, but Duncan couldn’t hear a lick of humor to the sound. Instead it was a hollow, snickering sound in the fog. It made Duncan’s fur rise.
