Chapter 34. Into the Mist

Mina looked out of the window of her bedroom.  The forest beyond the convent was shrouded in mist, and a light rain pattered against the leaves beyond the window.  She felt melancholy and lost.

She imagined she could see her mother’s face on the other side of the window, and she placed her hands against the cool glass.  Her mother smiled in return, her weathered features softening.  Suddenly Mina heard a growl, and a clawed hand slashed across her mother’s face, leaving it in bloody ribbons, and Mina instinctively jumped back into the safety of the bedroom.  As her mother fell back into darkness a cruel wolf’s head with red eyes stared back at Mina.

Mina sat down on the bed to catch her breath, and then began to sob quietly.  Her mother did not deserve her...
