In their conquest of the north the Turks were stalled at Turna Rosa – the Red Tower. The Red Tower blocked any advance through the Borgo Pass, and was fortified by a line of battlements that stretched from the walls of the tower to either side of the rocky mountain pass.
The tower earned its name from all of the blood that had been spilled there, so much that the base of the tower was stained red.
The Wallachians, led by the fierce Prince Vlad, had held back the Turks for weeks at the Red Tower. The narrow passage allowed for only a limited concentration of force, and at most fifty attackers could advance alongside one another in the tight quarters.
