Frank woke to the sound of soft groaning. The horizon did not yet show the first glimmers of dawn, and the campfires had burned low enough that the only light came from their glowing embers. Frank peered through the darkness to locate the source of the sound. A sharp motion to his left drew his attention. The retching sound that followed explained the nocturnal movement. The men of the 19th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry had suffered from a variety of maladies since the beginning of the campaign. Hardly a day or night passed that some poor soul was not running off to follow the dictates of his illness-ridden body.
