Opal Mosely knew her daddy was dead a day before the telegram arrived. She had been working on her embroidery when the Yellow Spirit came over her.

"It is time," the disembodied voice intoned.

"He's gone?"

The Yellow Spirit did not answer her, which Opal took to mean "yes."

Opal found it difficult to mourn a man she had never known. She'd seen a picture of him and her mama, from before she was born. But aside from the visitations from the Yellow Spirit, which were apparently her daddy's doing, she felt no real connection to the man who had given her life. She asked, "What would you have me do?"

"I want his two associates."
