CHAPTER 18

Zara switched off the engine. They had arrived in Bath in just over two hours and fifteen minutes. Someone must have been watching over them; the roads were relatively quiet, every traffic light seemed to be with them and for once there were no delays due to road works. Phil Hounsell had sat beside her in silence, alone with his thoughts and fears; she could see him tense every now and then, as she manoeuvred the car through any minor hold ups at a speed that she found exhilarating. She wasn’t convinced he shared her enjoyment of the trip. She had never driven so far so fast in her life.

“We made it,” she said.
