California, April 2007

Kate had not laid eyes on June and Robert Henderson since she landed her job at the Bureau.  It was good to see familiar faces.  They never appeared to age through the years, except their hair now showed a few signs of gray.  She instantly imparted the wonderful news she was expecting a baby.

June inquired, “When is the father joining you, dear?”

“He won’t be.  He was an agent and killed in the line of duty.”  The little white lie at the end seemed necessary.

“Oh, sweetheart, I’m so sorry.”

“We were never married, but I’ll always have a part of him with me now.”  Maybe her brief stint in the field had taught her a few tricks.  She actually sounded co...
