Kate was barely twenty weeks pregnant when she started having severe abdominal pains and bleeding.  Nathan rushed her to the emergency room.  Dr. Miller met them at the hospital and ordered an ultrasound.  She appeared to be concerned as she stared at the screen. 

“Kate, you have a placenta separation.   The placenta is starting to peel away from your uterus.  I’m going to admit you into the hospital for close observation.  If the separation continues, we’re going to have to take the baby.”

“Dr. Miller, isn’t my son too small to survive?”

“I’m sorry, but the baby won’t survive anyway if your condition gets any worse.”
