Nathan came to the mansion an hour ahead of the guests, bearing gifts for Kate’s thirtieth birthday.  He was holding a gorgeous bouquet of lilacs and lavender roses.  Sebastian took the flowers to be placed in a vase, while she escorted her husband into the sitting room.  A box of Knipschildt Chocolatier and a bottle of Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1999 were amongst the presents, along with a small box that clearly contained jewelry.  Inside was a platinum pendant of an angel holding a heart-shaped diamond.

“This is lovely, but I don’t think I can accept it.”

“And why not?”

“It’s very personal and not exactly appropriate for a nearly divorced couple.”

“You’ll always be my angel....
