flinched at the loud thud of the goat carcass smacking the earth. He turned to find Michael with his hunting knife already unsheathed. Andrew, grateful not to receive another reproach, moved to help.

            The brothers managed to finish their task just as night was falling, and the smell of roasting meat escaped into the unseasonably chilly air along with the smoke that billowed from the cave mouth.

            Supper proceeded in weary silence, until Michael surprised the others by setting his haunch of meat aside and saying, “Perhaps it’s time we started making our way back down.”

            For a while there was only the sound of the crackling fire.
