     “Auschwitz was declared a museum on July 2, 1947, and they tried to preserve as many things as they could to not only show what happened there, but also to honor the dead.  Religious symbols, like a cross, were put up near Bunker Two.  A Star of David was also put up.  Several crosses have been put up, and taken down, but one still remains.  In 2009, the main gate sign was stolen.  I thought, what irony.  The authorities found it cut into three pieces in a forest outside Gdansk two days later.  They’ve restored it and it’s awaiting display in the museum.  Several memorial plaquettes, in different languages, lay on the grounds.  Documents saved, victims’ property, objects, shoes take up most of one hallway, eyeglasses, dishes, hair cut, sui...
