“At first, when we got there, people looked out for everyone else, especially those who were in the cattle cars with us.  But, then, as they started being shot and marched to go to the gas chambers, it all changed.  Something shifted and we all started looking out for only ourselves, number one.  We did anything and everything just to keep ourselves alive.  Some of us beat each other up for food, or even killed for it.  It was survival.  If the SS caught them, they shot both of them on the spot and the SS would eat the bread.  We’d rat out anyone, for anything, if it meant we got more soup, more bread, leniency in chores.”
