We all really felt for her having to make the decision she had to.”

     “So she was forced to abort me?  Why didn’t she just tell the movie people to screw off and keep me and settle down and raise me?”

     “Yeah.  Yeah, she was forced, pretty much, to abort you.  I’m sorry.”  She paused again, then spoke hoarsely.  “So much of herself was tied up in her career, her self image, how others saw her, she had to have that attention to function, to be her.  Joe didn’t understand that, I don’t think, from what I read in later years.  She had to have that public approval, that public love, no matter what it cost.”

     “Even me.”
