My second question was, “I’m going to be a father?” I asked it with a lot less anger. The idea of fatherhood didn’t grind my gears as much as cable TV.

     E-- shifted nervously on the couch. “Yes,” she said softly. “Are you excited?”

     “Of course I am.” I was surprised at how quickly the words came out of my mouth.

     E-- smiled. “I’m so glad you feel that way,” she said, “because I think we should get married soon. It’s the right thing to do.”

     “It is.” Again, I was surprised at how quickly the words came out of my mouth.

     “It doesn’t have to be anything fancy.”
