Bearing Gifts

E- was over tonight and we had a little disagreement. Most of the evening was spent on opposite sides of the couch. I think we’re both tense about me meeting her parents. I want to bring them gifts, something other than wine. Something simple, but thoughtful. Something like ornaments or gloves.
“Bring wine,” E-- repeated for the tenth time. “Anything else is just awkward.”
I continued to argue. Her use of the word “awkward” bothered me. “Your parents are not being put in an embarrassing situation,” I said. “If anything, they may be impressed that I bring something other than wine.”
T--’s number came up on my mobile. E-- allowed me to take the call.
