“Yes Jim, I’m doing everything I can for Nikki; as usual,” I said through gritted teeth, muttering the last part. I hate my in-laws. Okay, I don’t hate them per se but coexisting with them in life was challenging if nothing else, especially when Nikki was on the fritz. 

As an only child Nikki had grown up as the apple of her parents’ eye, especially by her father Jim, a self-made man. Having built an empire from a small environmental consulting firm, he had started years ago, he was a very wealthy man. Unfortunately all the money in the world could not save his daughter from herself.

Looking back it was easy to see how her mental illness had affected her ability to function in a normal household and with her peers...
