Raise a glass to Nathalie Tauziat!
Some years ago, I watched the finals of the Wimbledon tennis championships on television. Veteran Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia played even more veteran Nathalie Tauziat of France for the women’s singles title. Two of the more mature players on the circuit, their combined ages totaled 59 years. With a noisy gang of teenagers clamoring to dominate women’s tennis, seeing those two oldsters brush them aside at Wimbledon was a breath of fresh air.
Tauziat was the first French woman to reach the Wimbledon final since flamboyant Suzanne Lenglen won her sixth singles title 73 years earlier. The lively Lenglen won her first Wimbledon at age 20, and scandalized the All-England Club by wearing short skirts, no corset, and sipping brandy during matches.
