His eyes were gummy, his head filled with cotton, but he clawed his way to awareness millimeter by millimeter.  Sohrab squeezed his eyes tight, then forced them open, though they merely fluttered.  Bright light flooded his retinas, and he closed them again.  Somewhere far away, someone squeezed his hand.  His chest was tight and on fire.

“It was touch and go there for a while, buddy.”  Jack… it was Jack’s voice.  “The bullet nicked the aorta, and they lost you twice in the wagon on the way here.”  He leaned closer and tilted his head.  “Your wife and kids have been here most of the time, but I sent them home to rest about an hour ago.”  He snorted.  “Lucky me.”
