Water sluiced over Amber’s skin. It was as hot as she could stand, and steam clouded the glass of the shower, covering the world outside in fuzzy white gauze; if she tried really hard, she could imagine there was nothing beyond. That wouldn’t be a bad thing at all, in her opinion. Maybe that’s what heaven is—a clean white space where you can hurt no one but yourself. She doubted humanity could be so lucky. Hell was doubtless the same thing; it was only a matter of perspective.
She reluctantly shut the water off and stepped out, lifting the fluffy peach-colored towel from the heated rack. This was the first chance to get really clean since she was last here—a lifetime ago. She toweled off lazi...
