Beth drove until the sirens faded, popping her gum in a rapid staccato. It was an old habit, and one which grew worse when she was under pressure. She scrunched her face, rolled the window down, and spat the wad to the pavement. Within seconds of rolling the window up, she already craved another. She relaxed the pressure on the accelerator and the car slowed to just above the speed limit. No use getting away clean, then getting stopped by DC police.
“Anyone got a destination in mind?” She glanced at Janice in the rear-view mirror.
