Sohrab tapped on the glass, and the door swung open and Amber unfolded from the back seat. She looked haggard in a way that suggested more than a sleepless night, and his heart sank at the sight of her, then skipped a beat entirely when the other passenger door opened and a much older woman stepped out. The newcomer brushed strands of hair from her face in a losing battle with the wind, all the while staring at the Shadowman.
“Why are you here?” Amber stood, chin jutting forward in raw defiance.
“The same as you, I imagine. Jack’s trail seems to have stopped right here.”
