The two rounded the last corner before they reached the school and walked along the bus path. Somewhere along the way, Lt. Florence had parked his car and started tailing them on foot.

The Halloween Festival was being held behind Arkham High School. The woods had reclaimed a demolished portion of the school—the ground was still concrete, but plants were growing through the cracks. The seniors usually hung out here during lunch. Farther from school, the land was more wild, and behind that was a dense forest.

Cars were parked everywhere, from the legitimate parking spots on the street, to the grass that served as the soccer team's practice fields. Tess was glad to see the festival was as popular as it was, but the dense crowd wouldn’t make it easy to...
