“Well, it was a good try,” Tess said, trying to lighten the mood in the interrogation room. 

“Yeah, fantastic,” Titus responded, pulling the chain on his handcuffs angrily. The cuffs were made to keep his palms pressed together, and the more he pulled, the tighter they became.

Tess raised her hand and examined the single cuff locking her to the table. It was loose on her wrist, and she was fairly sure they had only put it on her for show. She pulled her hand out of the cuff with little difficulty. She quickly replaced it as the door to the room opened. 

Colonel Gardean walked in carrying her usual assortment of ominous paperwork and setting it on the table before sitting down across from them. Another officer followed her in. Tess recognized him as the man who had interrog...
