The blank piece of paper sat on the desk, taunting Tess. She stared at it, willing it to tell her its secrets.

Titus had explained everything—not about magic, that was going to years, if not decades.

She had been mad that he had kept her in the dark, but she couldn’t help but like how he had cared enough to try to protect her, though she would never admit it to him.

He explained his suspicions about the culprit, but he hadn't been happy about his lack of progress in determining who the summoner was. When he talked about the summoner a miasma of anger spread from him, causing Tess to feel nauseated.

She had thought about the summoner a lot, too. First, he had killed Dr. Armitage, and if what Colonel Gardean said was true, he had threatened thousands of lives...
