Now, Titus was certain Shade was trying not to laugh.

Jeremy was actually looking over Titus's shoulder at Tess. An expression of what can only be described as pity was creeping onto the bully’s face. I guess he was taught girls are allowed to be weak. Jeremy's gaze returned to Titus.

“And what guarantee do we have you'll come back?”

“Guarantee?” Oh, right, he'd want that.

Titus's mind shot out in every direction, grasping for excuses. Then he saw his exit: “Nick.”

“I have to take the girl home, and then I’ll come back and save my emotionally dysfunctional friend here. If I don't, I assume he'll be returned worse for wear?”...
