ran from the new kid, taking the quickest route to the nurse’s office.

 

Mrs. Turner, the school nurse, hovered over Tess, checking for any signs of illness. She wasn't allowed to give her any medicine without parental permission, but Mrs. Roe wasn’t answering her phone.

Mrs. Turner mumbled something to Tess about calling her mother again, then left.

Tess wouldn't be allowed to leave without parental permission, either, and wouldn't be able to get any medication to help, not that it would if what the boy said was true.

How long do I have? she wondered. It had progressed pretty quickly… If it continued at the same rate, how bad would it be tomorrow? Probably pretty bad.
