looked up to see Titus watching her with the same judgmental look from the night before, like he was trying to figure out if she was lying or not. She tried to meet his gaze, but his gaze was stronger, and she gave up and looked away.

The papers turned out to be a list of expectations and the syllabus. Tess quit reading after she read: I will assign two hours of homework every day. This is expected to be completed by the next English class, regardless of if I collect it or not. She decided to watch Titus again.

He moved down the aisles, passing out papers in an exaggeratedly bored manner. As he passed a group of pretty girls, the light played tricks on her eyes, making it appear that his shadow was moving on its own.

Still, the voice droned on. “Pink, black, red.”...
