The shockwave from the page slammed into Tess with the force of a ten-ton hammer centered on her forehead. The pain was so intense she was sure there was a hole boring itself through the front of her cranium.

She clenched her teeth, trapping a scream of pain, not even noticing her fingertips digging into her palm.

The world faded and grew black and cold. A single point of searing light lit like a supernova before Tess’s eyes. She tried to close her eyes and shut off the burning sensation, but the light continued blazing into her mind.

Then the images started.

Things she couldn't understand—monsters and beasts—deviants that tested her very sanity with nothing but their image. Aberrations that couldn't exist lumbered through her vision. Her brain drowned in light,...
