The doctor, too, had become preoccupied with the inscriptions. It was apparent now that the tinker believed himself to be from another age. And it did provide a plausible though unlikely explanation for his appearance eight years earlier.
Unlikely, but not impossible. The doctor's curiosity had been aroused. On the evening of the new moon, he picked out a stout walking stick, put on his overcoat, and set out for the mountains. He had a good knowledge of the area. He was confident he could locate the boulder bearing the inscription.
It was not easy to reach the place by the light of the stars. But as the doctor climbed, he could see a glimmering light above him, and he made his way towards it.
