The chieftain, it seems, could not accept the death of his only daughter. He had gathered together wise men from amongst his own clan and those of his neighbours. Together they had cast a potent spell. The girl could return to life, but only if the young man found her soul in that other world. The chieftain and the wise men would meet again at the pool's edge on the appointed day. The young man had to bring her back through 'The Pool of Oblivion' within fourteen days of meeting her. If not, she would indeed die.

    The third inscription, the doctor told him, was in an older script. It was used by sorcerers for particularly powerful incantations. His university colleague had not been able to decipher it but had promised him an answer by the end of the week.
