Paul started to answer and then froze. His eyes went dead for a moment, and his body was completely still. Again, I was reminded that he had no need to breathe, so when he went still, it was startling.

The seconds passed, and I wasn’t sure what to do. Then a series of emotions crossed his face, almost too quickly to track. Pain, anger and was that resignation?

His body relaxed, and life returned to his eyes, though they remained gray, no hint of blue visible.

“What just happened?”

“It will be tomorrow night.” His voice was lifeless. “I’ll know where at the time.”

“But how?”

A bit of animation returned to his face, and his voice developed some tone and timbre. “I’m too old for him...
