didn’t let my smile falter. “That’s the one you know about.” Okay, I didn’t really have any other protections up, but no reason to let him know that.

His expression faltered again, and his eyes turned to Paul. “You’re drawing attention to yourself. I suggest you leave before someone calls the quaint excuse this town has for law enforcement. No challenge in coming to get you if you’re behind bars. I’d rather you had room to run.”

Paul glanced around and obviously noticed the hasty retreat that had gone on around us.

“This isn’t over, Malachai.”

“Of course not. I’ve still got lots of playing to do.” The bartender tipped an imaginary hat. “This has been fun. Until next time.”
