started to answer, but Mack beat me to it. “I trust him. He’s going to help Jimmy.” His gaze on me was steady. “That’s all I need to know. He’s human. He doesn’t have to help our kind, but he is. And he’s not asking for anything in return.”

My throat choked up slightly at his quiet confidence. I’d do my best to be worthy of it.

Runner frowned but then shrugged. “Okay, then. If it’s what you want, then I’ll take one too.” He turned to Paul. “How early do you want to get in position?”

Paul looked at me. “What time is sunrise this morning?”

I didn’t hesitate. “6:44.”
