Flies swarmed over them, and the light revealed something moving in the soft tissue of their faces. My stomach rebelled yet again when I realized they were maggots. The bodies were bloated, which I thought meant they’d been there at least a couple of days. That fit with when I found the kid.
Paul knelt over the bodies, shining the light up and down the corpses. I glanced away. The moving light plus the moving bugs was more than I could take.
Suddenly, I realized something. He’d been right about the smell. I must have been getting used to it because it wasn’t as overwhelming. Small favors.
