She looked thoughtful but didn’t say anything for several moments. Jim sipped his coffee and gave her time to think. Finally, she shook herself and said, “Okay. I just can’t help but wonder, you know, if I’d done things differently?”

He nodded back. “You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t wonder.”

They both drank coffee, the silence heavy between them. Denise spoke first. “I guess we’ll need to go back to my place then. To get the ring.”
