Denise shrugged. “Not really, but I wasn’t a complete door mat with him.”

“Sorry, didn’t mean to imply otherwise,” Jim said, with a rueful look. “Anyway, let’s say he was ready to target Kevin next. It makes sense. Not to disparage his skills, but in this situation, a cop is the weak link. John basically cut his intended prey out of the herd, so to speak, by using a strategy that would get him alone long enough to take out. I think he planned for us to get there after his handiwork was done, providing maximum shock to us. He’d wanted us to be present but not be able to do anything to stop it.”

Denise was nodding. “But it didn’t work out the way he planned.”
