Glancing around, as if expecting John to jump out at her, she headed next door. She was aware of Jim watching her until she had arrived at the front door.

Sandra answered her knock with a smile that looked forced. “How are you holding up?”

Denise forced her own smile and answered. “About as well as you’d expect. Can I come in for a minute?”

“Sure.” Sandra held the door open and motioned her inside. “What’s up?” she asked as soon as she’d closed the door.
