“Right,” I said. “So, if I were Malachai and could make mind-controlled puppets, I’d keep some of them off stage, ready to spring an ambush at the worst possible time.”

Runner nodded. “So you want us to patrol the fringes and take them down first.”

“Yep. Then all we have to worry about are the ones we can see. Not having to watch our backs will be a big help. Think you can do that without Malachai knowing you’re there?”

They both nodded. “Werewolves stalk better than vampires,” Mack said, his tone confident.

Runner’s nod was less certain. “But won’t he know when his puppets are dispatched?”

I grinned a wicked grin. “Oh, I’m counting on it....
