            Alex lived at a Schoners Motel when the dorms closed for the holidays. Most people remember Schoners because of their nationwide chain of family-friendly buffet restaurants, and probably never even realize that in the mid-eighties the company experimented with building motels next to the restaurants to keep their traveling customers close at hand. When the restaurant chain hit hard times the motels were the first to go. Today most of them set boarded up along the highway, their signs stained by exhaust fumes and their snap-on letters missing. The few that still operate have been bought out by private individuals; some of which renovate and improve what stood before and others who let the places fall apart slowly until only those with no other option are left to pay in cash week to week.
