I went back to the basement, my knees shaking with each downward step. I withdrew the sheet from the Remington, and took up the one beside it, and read the words with horror. Never could I be capable of such nefarious actions. I ran up the stairs, but then, remembering the police car out front, forced myself to walk slowly so as not to be seen running past the windows. At once I went to the bed and lifted the mattress. At first all I could see was darkness, but just before my sigh of relief, with careful inspection I could indeed see the stain of blood soaked into it. The scream froze in my throat. It couldn't be. It simply couldn't be. I lowered the mattress to its proper place and tried to make the bed look undisturbed, all the while my hands frantically shaking. I shut off the lights and close...
