Shirley turned out of the parking lot onto Broadway, and directed the Mercedes onto I-5 North, then I-84 East. We weren't headed for my home in Lake Oswego, nor to her loft in Northwest Portland. I knew better than to interrupt her thoughts as she smoothly drove us to a destination I would learn when we got there.

    We left I-84 for I-205 and I wondered if perhaps we were headed south for Oregon City, or even Lake Oswego after all, though the long way for sure. Instead, we left 205 at the Estacada exit heading east.

    Within minutes we were in the countryside, but we didn't stop for another fifteen or twenty minutes, when after taking several roads I'd never heard of, Shirley pulled into a private drive and stopped at the gate. Ahead appeared to be a fore...
