Shirley called me at the clinic. I was in the middle of a consultation with a young woman suffering her third respiratory infection since March. I was giving her my "if you don't stop smoking, you're going to die" lecture when Millie popped her head in the door and told me I had an emergency phone call. I left my patient to my student assistant, and ran to the front desk.

    "Mary, I need you. Meet me on Old River Road behind Marylhurst in twenty minutes."

    "Shirley, wait, I'm with a..." but it was no use. She hung up.

    As I drove south on I-205 toward the Lake Oswego exit, I was fuming. Shirley could be so exasperating sometimes. I never called her back about the Leoni article, and now, almost a week lat...
