It begins with you being almost dead, either by illness, injury, or, in most cases, being bitten and drained to the point of death, something that requires tremendous willpower because it's easy to take it too far.” I shook my head in bewilderment. “I'm not sure how this was romanticized in modern vampire fiction, but being bitten by one of us isn't exactly a pleasant experience. Every drink taken puts stress on the heart, stopping it for a split second, and your veins feel like they're on fire. Then, if you've managed to stay alive, you're given a fair amount of vampire blood and that's where the real torment begins.
