The North Road was always busy with people coming and going and this morning was no exception. It was the only road that passed directly through the Wall and on to the forges, fisheries, and wooleries of the Otanedii and the Dumnonii. From the customs gate at the Wall it was four miles to the fork where the road divided into three. The right would take you through the lowlands to the coast, to the left a fortified Roman Way as far as the garrison at Habitancum, then a rougher path to Brem of Otanedi, further north toward the highlands of the Damnonii, and finally to the North Vallum that marked Pict and DalRiada lands.
