“Your majesty.” She dipped down out of respect, careful not to let the towel move. “To what do I owe the honor?” Forcing herself not to protest when Mara squeezed inside her room, Evelyn pulled her towel tighter and shut the door behind them. Once the door was closed, Mara pounced. Evelyn didn’t even have time to produce a word to object before Mara had her pinned to the bed.

“You can start by telling me what you did to Alexander. And then you can explain why you’re leading the rebellion against me.” Her voice was shrill, the words coming out like daggers against Evelyn’s cool flesh.

“With all due respect, I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She tried to reason with Mara, but the gravity of her situation sank over her like a veil...
