Mara stood outside Evelyn’s door, waiting. She didn’t trust the woman, even if they were to be briefly related. There was something unnatural about the way Evelyn seemed to illuminate the room, like she couldn’t ever belong to the darkness within. Mara had welcomed it long ago and it was foreign to her to think in color, as her guest did. What further concerned her was the way Alexander seemed to think Evelyn could do no wrong. It had been a source of their only argument, the way he would jump willingly each time she looked at him. Mara could not fathom that kind of emotion, and interpreting it as weakness had chastised Alexander for it.
