“Tell me, Lady Elizabeth, oh grand fortune hunter of ill-whispered repute, why would you, after managing to acquire the manor and the title of which you sought, hold such simple fascination for a loom as if still a mere peasant with sartorial duties?  What secrets have you been weaving away back there in your sewing room?”  These are questions Hal Baker, an American, will ask one day while visiting Lillicrap Manor almost a full hundred years into the future, but in the present time he has neither been born nor even thought of.  But if his great-grandmother, the lady of the manor, could have heard his questions she’d surely have a mouthful to tell him…perhaps even directives to warn him…if only there was some way they could communicate…if only…
