‘Did you believe him?’

Wright Watson shook his head. ‘Not for one minute, Harry. Did you see his eyes as he answered? I have seen a few shifty looks in my time, but that was one of the shiftiest!’

Makepeace laughed. ‘I thought you would say that sir! I agree. Walker must know about Laverne, surely.’

Watson nodded. ‘It makes no sense, assuming what Gladys Grimshaw told us is correct. There is more to that woman than meets the eye, do you not think?’

The Detective Sergeant shook his head. ‘I don’t know what it is though, sir! What about Stanford George? The only one not to receive a warning letter; was going to be auditioned last, after Burford; offered the job without further ado, no doubt because of his uncle’s position....
